1166 - Brunswick Lion statue created. He grew up in England and became count palatine of the Rhine through his 1193 marriage to Agnes, heir to the Staufen count. A square in the city center surrounded by at leats 500 years of history: Burg Dankwarderode, the Lion of Braunschweig (Löwenstandbild), Dom St Blasii, Dompredigerhaus, Viewegen, Von Veltheimsches haus and Huneborstelsches haus. It is a Romanesque sculpture which was most probably cast in Braunschweig – the first large detached sculpture of the Middle Ages. Come for the architecture, the cathedral, the museum, the lion monument, but don't miss visiting the very small book store tucked away in a corner.

Burgplatz William was born in England during his father's exile; he remained there when Henry returned to Saxony and was raised at Richard Lionheart's court. The castle, cathedral, neoclassical Vieweghaus and beautiful half-timbered buildings line its edges, while the Brunswick Lion stands proudly at the centre of it all.
