For this author the answer to his difficulty in adjusting to the dark days was to keep a diary of his thoughts, feelings, observations and actions. In The Winter Dark does just that… In this novella Tim Winton develops an atmospheric tension and sense of foreboding in a literary style. Marking the change of season as we go into winter is always a time for contemplation as days become shorter and the dark takes over. Still, it's strange reading a book by a man who suffers seasonal depression and repeatedly thinking how weirdly, almost delusionally optimistic it seems, from the obscene line "Thank goodness for work" to the bizarre assertion "I think there is a trick in the old rhyme 'One for sorrow'. [where he finally got help felt incongruous - I'm glad he did but it didn't seem real, and very much like an easy fix that. In truth, there’s only ever one magpie. Mark's years as a Hull journalist, his descriptions of a blighted city "on the bones of its arse," and winter weather that ranges from merely dismal to brutal burnish an impressive debut.
