Most romaine lettuce have a growing period of 65 to 80 days, depending on the variety. If you want to start your butter lettuce inside, sow the seeds into cells one inch deep approximately three to four weeks before you plan on transplanting the seedlings outdoors.
This indicates the plant is preparing to bolt to seed, and greens collected from such plants are often too bitter for consumption. Entire plants can be harvested in mid-development while the leaves are still plump and tender, but before a stem has started to form.
